Emergency Radio

Emergency radio probably isn't a good name for this page, but I'll press on.  Radio communications has been a passion of mine as far back as i can remember.  As a child it was a great hobby and kept me out of trouble.  In this age of high speed internet, 24/7/365 cable news channels and cellular telephones you may be wondering why i would bring this up.  Well here is the rub.  I've been troubleshooting a wide variety of equipment for may years.  One of the most frequent "fixes" went something isn’t working is making sure "it's" plugged in.  I like to comment, electricity helps that.  Well it's the same during a bad storm, when the power goes out what are you left with?  Cell phone towers have emergency power generators but they need fuel, and quickly run out.  You're TV needs cable or some other feed, but that can be cut by falling trees.  Basically every means of communication you depend on in everyday life is far more vulnerable than you know.  Cable, telephone, radio, all of it is maintained behind the screens in ways you had no idea where happening.  At some point during a storm the danger to these maintenance miracle works becomes too great, and the provider of the service (who or what ever it may be) besides that customer service isn't as important as employee safety.  So they pull there people back to a safe shelter.  One by one each of the services fail, the power goes out, phone lines are cut, the cables are flooded and you get cut off from the information you need to keep track of what is happening.  This doesn't have to happen and it isn't very expensive to provide equipment ahead of time to keep in touch.  One by one ill go over each of the "media" showing the pro's and cons of each and recommend equipment with a tight budget in mind.
